The Britannia is often regarded as Europe’s first bullion coin. Since its launch in 1987, The Royal Mint has issued it in four sizes: 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz.
Since 2013, the gold coin has been struck in 999.9 fine gold. Earlier issues were made from a more durable 916.7 fine gold alloy. Since 2001, the reverse has featured Britannia, the female personification of Britain, in a variety of designs. The obverse of this issue features Queen Elizabeth II, who appeared on the coin from its first release.
The popular bullion coin recorded its highest mintage in 1987, with 92,000 coins. Its mintage has declined year on year ever since. The gold Britannia is a classic among collectors and investors.
